Welcome to the website of the International Scientific Society for Mediterranean Fortifications, FORTMED. You will find here a comprehensive source of information about the Society’s many activities, including our publications, our annual conference, and other activities.
The defense of the Mediterranean coast is a subject area approached by many researchers and scholars, resulting in a significant amount of progress reflected in the substantial quantity of existing historiography. History from this area is truly extraordinary: humanism, technological advances, new roles for engineers and architects, progress in maritime cartography and naval engineering and all of this added to new land discoveries, flourishing empires and, of course, piracy and wars. All these factors are present in an undiluted way in the Mediterranean, which also played a vital role as an extensive myriad of borders for kingdoms and religions.
The main aims of FORTMED are exchange and advancement of knowledge, dissemination of research, valorisation, management and preservation of Culture and Heritage that developed on the Mediterranean coast, taking also into account the phenomena that took place overseas.
Society has an interdisciplinary aim where architects, engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, cartographers, heritage managers, tourism experts, experts in restoration-conservation and promotion of heritage will participate. The idea is to provide more inclusive, more solid and more up to date views, leading us to the highest point of the investigations on this subject in the twenty-first century.
Do you want the support of FORTMED in any cultural or research activity? Do not hesitate to tell us. Please, present new research, exchange ideas, propose collaborations. All academics, scholars and researchers are welcome.
